From March 10 to 14, 2026, Dr. Kanny Diallo and Dr. Missa Kouassi Firmin of the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques en Côte d’Ivoire (CSRS) participated in the launch workshop for the Campylobacter Control Campaign (CCC) project, held at the MRC Unit The Gambia at LSHTM in Fajara.
This project, coordinated by the University of Oxford, brings together partners from The Gambia, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, and the United Kingdom to characterize the epidemiology of and strengthen control measures for Campylobacter infections—a bacterium responsible for the majority of gastrointestinal infections—by leveraging genomics and a One Health approach to better understand its transmission.
The workshop provided an opportunity to:
present the sampling plans of the various partner countries, participate in practical exercises on Campylobacter sampling and culture, discuss genomic approaches and vaccine development strategies, and visit a research station and communities in the Basse region of The Gambia where the study will be conducted.
This meeting provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen scientific collaboration among the various institutions, share field experiences, and harmonize research methods among the partner teams in preparation for submission to their respective ethics committees.
The knowledge gained will help strengthen research capacity at the CSRS and improve our understanding of Campylobacter transmission.
